There are many birthing hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City. If you don’t have health insurance, you will most likely spend more and if you choose a local hospital, you will probably experience some cultural differences, but the quality of maternity healthcare here is very well maintained. Keep in mind that international health care cost more than Vietnamese hospitals.
Maternity packages vary, and prices are dependent on the hospital you choose (Vietnamese or international, English speaking or not), and the type of room (private, shared, with or without TV). If you decide to buy a package, make sure it includes blood tests, an obstetrician, ultrasounds and other necessary services. Medical costs in Vietnam are substantially lower than what you would pay (without insurance) in most Western countries. Quality of care is fine but you may have to deal with a lack of communication from Vietnamese staff.

Local private or public clinics often do not have English-speaking staff but one can still find excellent local doctors and surgeons on standby for emergency situations. If you need general medical attention, local clinics offer good quality in relation to the price. The best public clinics have the expertise, experience, and the latest technology. They can often provide top-notch healthcare for a fraction of the price you would expect to pay in the west.

You can find plastic surgery divisions in many public and private hospitals across Ho Chi Minh City. Since the formation of the HCMC Plastic Surgery Association in 2007, plastic surgery faculties began at the Phạm Ngọc Thạch Medical University and the HCMC Medicine and Pharmacy University.
Vietnam’s cosmetic surgeons are competent and charge fair prices. Many specialists were trained overseas. This, combined with modern facilities and equipment, ensures a high level of service. Prices for procedures in Vietnam can be up to 60% cheaper compared to the U.S. or Europe. Some 80 of HCMC’s 250 or so cosmetic surgery facilities are licensed by the authorities. Eight of these clinics are hospitals; the others are specialized clinics.
There are also a number of skin centers and beauty salons that have registered to offer plastic surgery services or who act as middle persons for clinics and hospitals. Some surgeries are performed illicitly by some beauty salons that advertise their services. Cosmetic surgeons warn people to be vigilant when seeking competent facilities to undergo surgery. There are risks to cosmetic surgery – like all surgeries – and no procedure is 100% safe; nor are there any guarantees that the outcome will be what one was expecting.

If you’re shopping around for health insurance in Vietnam, it’s important to educate yourself on the types of insurance, common practices, and the pros and cons of a local versus an international insurance provider. Read our tips below to help you find the best health insurance option in Ho Chi Minh City for you, your family, and your business.
Unlike the protocols in certain countries, Vietnamese law states that health insurance companies may do whatever is necessary to be profitable. This means that they are allowed to stop coverage for an individual at any time, no matter the reason!
When you buy your health insurance, the salesman might not inform you about the fine print in your contract. For example, they might not tell you that “special diseases” are covered, but only if you don’t fall ill with any within the first year of coverage.
They might also not tell you that every time you use their insurance for serious treatment, the premium increases, the amount covered decreases, and eventually you’ll have to pay a larger percentage of the bill you’re paying, even though the brochure says you’re fully covered.
We recommend sending all your questions via email beforehand to get proof of what the salesman has promised. Otherwise, the insurance provider may blame you for not reading your contract.
In a nutshell, the Vietnamese insurance providers can simply kick you out if they don’t see you as economically viable. International companies charge premiums of up to 500% and beyond (in extreme cases) if you’re costing them too much. It is not profitable for either group to keep you on board. If you argue, the companies can use Vietnamese laws to back up their actions.
Keep in mind that health insurance companies in Vietnam are meant to cover risk, not regularly occurring or chronic illnesses or conditions. That means if you have a history of cancer, they are less likely to cover you since they know it might reoccur in the future.
An insurance provider is always as good as their response to your first claim. Despite these risks, we have put a list together of the most well-known health insurance companies for expats in Vietnam.
